Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart lacrosse senior attackman
Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Coquitlam, B.C.) scored three goals to break the school’s Division I scoring mark tonight. Unfortunately, the hat trick came against second-ranked Syracuse, as the Orange left town with a 13-5 victory and the Kraus-Simmons Trophy.
Veltman, who has recorded at least one point in 23 consecutive games, raised his career goals total to 93, one better than the previous standard set by Jamie Breslin ’01. A second quarter assist gave Veltman 142 career points, one shy of the DI benchmark set by Nate Hill ’05.
Junior Kenny Nims (Watertown/Watertown, N.Y.) led SU with three goals and two assists, while senior Mike Leveille (Albany Academy/Delmar, N.Y.) added three goals and an assist.
The first half was a frantic end to end battle that kept the faithful for both squads on the edge of their seats, assuming a seat could be found. The McCooey Field bleachers were filled to capacity with hundreds of additional fans lining the sideline and seated on the hillside at either end of the bleachers.
Syracuse (6-1) opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest when Nims finished a feed from senior Steven Brooks (Bridgton Academy/Libertyville, Ill.). Eighty-eight ticks before the end of the first quarter Brooks (2g 1a) gave the Orange a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal.
Hobart (3-4) opened the second quarter scoring when senior attackman
Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) dumped home a behind the cage feed from Veltman. The Orange answered with two more goals to take a 4-1 lead at the 7:25 mark.
Veltman got his first goal when sophomore goalie
Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) flung a wild pass down field in an attempt to avoid a failure to advance call. Veltman boxed out his defender, caught the pass near the top right corner of the box and raced to the Syracuse cage, beating first-year goalie John Galloway (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.). Galloway finished with 14 saves, while Silberlicht made 12 stops.
SU carried a 5-2 lead into the half thanks to junior Matt Abbott’s (Nottingham/Syracuse, N.Y.) score 2:38 before the intermission.
The third quarter proved to be decisive as Syracuse outscored Hobart 4-1, outshooting the Statesmen 16-4. The Orange scored twice to open the frame, before Veltman matched Breslin’s scoring total thanks to a setup from Kirk (1g 1a).
Trailing by just four goals, the Statesmen had kept Leveille off the box score through the first 40 minutes of the contest. He finally broke through and extended his point scoring streak to 46 games with an assist to first-year long-stick midfielder Joel White (Cortland/Cortland, N.Y.) to make it 8-3. The solitary point opened a flood gate, as Leveille scored the game’s next three goals, spanning the third and fourth quarters, to put SU firmly in control.
First-year long-stick midfielder
Alex Caton (Bridgton Academy/Rochester, N.Y.) broke Syracuse’s scoring run with his second goal of the season. The Orange struck twice more before Veltman closed out the night’s scoring with his record setter, beating Galloway from a sharp angle on the man-up.
SU finished with a 45-31 advantage in shots and a 38-27 edge in ground balls. Hobart junior midfielder
Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) collected a game-high nine GBs.
The Statesmen are back in action on March 29, when they travel to ECAC rival Fairfield. Faceoff with the Stags is scheduled for 1 p.m.
