Box Score PITTSFORD, N.Y.—The 14th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team used five unanswered goals at the start of the second half to rally for an 11-10 comeback victory over St. John Fisher this afternoon. The Herons improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 3-2 overall.
Senior
Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) netted four goals, including the game-winner, and picked up five ground balls to lead William Smith. Sophomore
Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) tallied three times and collected four ground balls for the Herons, while senior
Rachel Stahl (Charles W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added two goals and scooped five loose balls.
The Cardinals were led by Laura Glavin’s four goals, one assist, and game-high seven ground balls. Laurie Quackenbush contributed two goals, a helper, and seven groundballs for St. John Fisher as well.
The host Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three minutes, and quickly built their lead to 6-1 at the 19 minute, 12 second mark. William Smith’s lone goal in the first 10 minutes of action came from Davidson’s stick on a free position shot.
Senior
Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.) set up Davidson and Stahl for back-to-back Heron goals at 13:30 and 11:35, respectively, to cut William Smith’s deficit to 6-3. The teams traded goals again before halftime, and the Cardinals took a 7-4 lead into the break.
Thirty seconds into the second stanza, Davidson found the back of the net on another free position shot, sparking a 5-0 Heron run and cutting St. John Fisher’s lead to 7-5. Fitzgerald scored two of her goals during the run, both on free position shots, including the go-ahead goal in the 38th minute. With 16:31 left on the clock, first-year
Cassie Findlay (Episcopal/Riverside, Conn.) capped the scoring dash, giving the visitors a 9-7 advantage. Stahl also tallied during the run.
The Cardinals would not go away, as Jill Lockwood notched a free position goal with 13:47 left to play, keeping her team with in one. Fitzgerald answered with an unassisted tally to put the Herons back up by two, 10-8, with 10:35 remaining.
St. John Fisher made one more run, netting two goals in the final 6:15 and tied the game at 10-all with less than four minutes to play. Just 32 seconds after the Cardinal’s 10th goal was scored, Davidson fired the unassisted game-winner, also her team-leading 10th of the season.
Junior goalkeeper
Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) collected seven saves in 44 minutes of action, including two in the final 3:24, to earn her first win of the season. St. John Fisher goalie Vicki Sahm also recorded seven stops.
William Smith will be in action again on March 28, when it opens Liberty League play at Vassar at 4 p.m.
