Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team edged SUNY Cortland 12-11 tonight on McCooey Field, thanks to sophomore
Molly Fitzgerald’s (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) game-winning goal with 3 minutes, 57 seconds left on the clock. The Herons improve their undefeated mark to 6-0 overall, while the Red Dragons fall to 3-5.
Senior
Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) led the William Smith offense with three goals, while Fitzgerald finished with two goals and two assists. Senior
Rachel Stahl (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) notched two goals and a helper as well, and sophomore
Sarah Goodkind (Millbrook School/Greenwich, Conn.) tallied twice.
Senior Rachel Cornwell (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) scored four goals to lead the Red Dragons, while sophomore Jessie Fritz (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) netted three.
The Herons needed less than four minutes to take a 2-0 lead, thanks to tallies from Davidson and Stahl. Fritz got the visitors on the board at the 20:52 mark, but Goodkind and Fitzgerald had the answer for William Smith, putting the Herons up 4-1 at 13:42.
After trading goals for the remainder of the half, the hosts took a commanding 6-2 advantage into the break.
The Red Dragons took over in the second half. After Heron junior
Nina Sperry (Daniel Hand/Madison, Conn.) and Cortland first-year Bri Shost (Mahopac/Mahopac, N.Y.) traded goals to start the period, Fritz netted her second goal of the day to spark a 6-0 Red Dragon run. The run was capped by an unassisted tally from Cornwell, and with 16:47 left to play, the visitors had seized a 9-7 lead.
Stahl, Goodkind, and senior
Jesse McKenna (Middlesex School/Wenham, Mass.) stopped Cortland’s momentum, combining for three Heron goals in less than a two minute span to put William Smith back in front, 10-9, with 14:52 remaining.
Cortland took the lead again, 11-10, after another Cornwell goal, but it would be short-lived. Davidson tied the game at 11-all with a good free position shot at 9:45, followed Fitzgerald’s game-winner at 3:57. Fitzgerald’s shot found the back of the net despite falling to the turf mid-shot.
Senior Heron goalkeeper
Morgan Baird (Pingree School/Gloucester, Mass.) collected nine saves in net, while junior
Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) picked up two and the win. Red Dragon netminder Deanne Abell (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.) recorded 14 stops.
William Smith will be back in action on April 5, when it hosts Lycoming in the first game of the annual Heron Draw at 10:30 a.m.
