William Smith lax downs St. Lawrence

Molly Fitzgerald
Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team improved its record to a perfect 10-0 this afternoon behind a seven-point effort from sophomore Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.). The Herons defeated St. Lawrence University 19-12, marking the program’s best start to a season since the 1995 team won its first 16 contests. William Smith moved to 4-0 in the Liberty League, while the Saints dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the league.

Along with Fitzgerald’s five goals and two assists, sophomore Sarah Goodkind (Millbrook School/Greenwich, Conn.) and senior Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) netted four goals apiece, while senior Rachel Stahl (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added a goal and three assists for the Herons.

Senior Alanna Waters (Taft School/Darien, Conn.) led the Saints with a goal and five assists, while first-year Kim Morse (North Yarmouth Academy/Peaks Island, Maine) notched four goals and a helper. Junior Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls/Glens Falls, N.Y.) also added four goals for the visitors.

Morse needed just 1 minute, 6 seconds to post the first goal of the game. The 1-0 lead for St. Lawrence was short-lived, however, as the Herons went on to score four in a row in the next five minutes, thanks to two goals from Davidson, one from Goodkind and one from sophomore Brittany Callaghan (St. Luke’s School/Armonk, N.Y.). Callaghan finished with two goals.

The Saints responded with a scoring run of their own, netting three straight to tie the game at 4-all. Fitzgerald’s first score of the day with 6:51 remaining in the first half put an end to the visitor’s streak, and sparked a five-goal outburst from the Herons to end the half. William Smith took a 9-4 advantage into halftime.

First-year Kara Grogan (Gunnery School/West Simsbury, Conn.) made the score 10-4 just 29 seconds into the second period, but the Saints would not go away. Forbes recorded back-to-back tallies, followed by Waters’ lone goal of the day, and another from Morse, to cut the Herons’ lead to 10-8 with 26:28 left to play.

After trading two quick goals, Forbes cut the lead to 11-10 on a free position shot at the 25:21 mark. That was as close as the Saints would get, as William Smith went on to outscore St. Lawrence 8-2 in the remainder of the half. Fitzgerald scored three of her goals in the second stanza.

Junior Heron goalie Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) recorded another successful day in net, stopping 10 shots, while St. Lawrence first-year Anna Marchand (Middlesex School/Concord, Mass.) recorded six saves.

The Herons will be back in action on April 15 at 5 p.m., when they host Nazareth for a non-conference game on McCooey Field.
