Sean Murphy
Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart lacrosse team defeated St. John’s 17-7 in an ECAC matchup on Boswell Field this afternoon. Eleven different Statesmen found the back of the net, led by senior attackman Daryl Veltman’s (Salisbury School/Coquitlam, B.C.) game-high three goals.

Hobart dominated the box score, outshooting the Red Storm 42-31, collecting more ground balls (37-25), winning more faceoffs (16-12), and clearing better (19 of 21 vs. 15 of 20).

With his three tallies as well as an assist, Veltman raised his career points total to 155, passing John Hayes ’77 to claim 17th place on the all-time points list. Veltman’s hat trick gives him 104 career goals, moving past Jeff Tambroni ’92 into 15th place on that all-time list.

Senior attackman Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) made a game-high four assists to claim 17th place on that career list with 59.

Senior midfielder Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.), junior attackman Jeff Colburn (CNS/Liverpool, N.Y.), sophomore attackman Kevin Curtin (Corcoran/Syracuse, N.Y.), and sophomore midfielder Doug Shiver (Delbarton/Morristown, N.J.) each netted a pair of goals, while junior d-middie Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) chipped in a goal and an assist.

First-years Tim Bigelow (Northfield Mt. Hermon/Walpole, Mass.) and Warren Kimber (Pingry School/Summit, N.J.) each notched their first career point with fourth quarter assists.

Senior attackman Rob Gannon (Schreiber/Port Washington, N.Y.) paced St. John’s with two goals and an assist.

Hobart led 2-0 after first quarter goals by Shiver and Colburn. The Statesmen extended their lead to 6-0 to start the second stanza. In a flurry of action in the final two minutes of the half, both teams scored twice to send Hobart into the break with an 8-2 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Lazore (Immaculate Heart/Carthage, N.Y.) opened the second half scoring, but SJU answered with consecutive scores to cut the Statesmen lead to 9-4. Hobart responded with three goals, including a pair of extra-man tallies, in less than three minutes to put the game out of reach.

After struggling to score man-up this season, the Statesmen added three more extra-man goals in the fourth quarter. Hobart was 5 of 7 with the advantage, nearly doubling the team’s extra-man goal total coming into the contest (7), while killing off all three of the Red Storm’s chances.

The Statesmen upped their record to 6-5 overall, 3-3 in the conference, marking the most league wins for Hobart since joining the ECAC in 2005. St. John’s falls to 1-10 overall, 1-4 in the ECAC.

The Statesmen will make their final road trip of the regular season on Tues., April 22, when they visit Canisius. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Time Warner Sports Buffalo.
