Pat Genovese became the first women's
lacrosse coach to record 350 wins.
Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The 11th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team defeated Rochester 12-9 in Liberty League action at Edwin Fauver Stadium this afternoon, giving Head Coach Pat Genovese her 350th career victory. Genovese is the first women’s lacrosse coach to reach the 350 mark, spanning all divisions. The Herons improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the league, while the Yellowjackets fell to 3-7 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.

William Smith sophomore Molly Fitzgerald (Gould Academy/Sudbury, Mass.) led the offense with five points on three goals and two assists, while classmate Sarah Goodkind (Millbrook School/Greenwich, Conn.) netted three goals. First-year Kara Grogan (Gunnery School/West Simsbury, Conn.) added two goals and an assist for the Herons, and senior Rachel Stahl (C.W. Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) tallied twice.

The Yellowjackes were led by Allyson Hogan’s two goals and three assists. Megan Jenkins contributed a goal and two helpers, while Danielle Mondro and Amanda Case each notched two goals for the hosts.

Senior Sarah Davidson (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) opened the scoring 1 minute, 16 seconds into the match to give William Smith a quick 1-0 lead.

Case answered for Rochester, sparking a 4-0 Yellowjacket run. Goodkind stopped the bleeding with her first tally on a free position shot at the 16:41 mark, cutting Rochester’s lead to 4-2.

The teams traded goals to end the opening period, and the hosts took a 5-3 advantage into halftime.

Stahl tallied just eight seconds into the second half to cut the Herons’ deficit to one, 5-4. After another Yellowjacket score with 22:27 remaining, Goodkind sandwiched two tallies around one from Stahl, snatching a 7-6 lead for the visitors.

Rochester tied the game twice more, but William Smith found an answer each time. Fitzgerald notched her third of the afternoon with 3:23 left to play to give the Herons a 10-8 lead. Hogan responded for the Yellowjackets to bring her team back to within one, but back-to-back goals from Grogan in the final three minutes secured the victory for William Smith.

Junior Becky Josefiak (West Seneca East/West Seneca, N.Y.) notched her ninth win in goal, recording 12 saves for the Herons. Rochester goalie Leslie Dube picked up six saves.

William Smith will be back in action on April 22, when it travels to Ithaca to take on the Bombers in a non-league contest at 5 p.m.
