Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior attackman
Jamie Kirk (Salisbury School/Orangeville, Ontario) recorded his first career hat-trick and sophomore goaltender
Max Silberlicht (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) matched his career-high saves total of 18 to lead the Hobart College lacrosse team to a 10-6 upset of 15th-ranked Loyola this afternoon on Boswell Field. The Statesmen (8-5, 4-3 ECAC) spoiled the ECAC champion Greyhound’s (7-5, 6-1) pursuit of perfection, handing them their first conference loss of the season.
In addition to Kirk’s offensive efforts, seniors
Daryl Veltman (Salisbury School/Coquitlam, B.C.) and
Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.) netted two goals apiece, with the former picking up an assist as well. Junior
Jeff Colburn (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.), sophomore
Mike Lazore (Immaculate Heart/Carthage, N.Y.) and first-year
Jeremy Tissenbaum (Mt. Lebanon/Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) all found the back of the net once to round out the scoring.
Hobart came out quickly, seizing a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the game on goals by Murphy and Kirk. The Greyhounds stormed back though, halving the Statesman lead just eight seconds after Kirk’s tally on a goal by Collin Finnerty. Finnerty was one of only two players to record two points for Loyola, scoring two goals, while Paul Richards picked up a pair of assists.
Chris Basler beat Silberlicht with 1:23 to go in the first quarter to even the score.
Cooper MacDonnell gave the Greyhounds their first and only lead of the game 2:26 into the second quarter. Less than a minute later, Kirk potted his second of the game to pull the Statesmen even, sparking a four-goal run off goals from Murphy, Lazore and Tissenbaum that would result in a 6-3 lead at the half.
P.T. Ricci pulled Loyola within two just 1:31 into the third quarter. While the first two quarters were fast-paced, open lacrosse with few whistles, the third was the complete opposite as each team took four penalties. The score stayed 6-4 before the Greyhounds leading scorer Shane Koppens took a 1 minute slashing penalty with 59 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing man-up opportunity, Veltman notched his 18th career man-up goal to restore the three goal lead. The Division I Statesmen career leader in goals (105) and points (157), Veltman now sits just one man-up goal shy of No. 2 Jared Bebee ’00 on the man-up goal list.
Less than a minute into the final frame, Finnerty deposited his second of the game only to have it nullified by Veltman’s second tally of the day with 7:52 remaining. Trailing 8-5, John Schaivone got the Greyhounds within two for the final time just 13 seconds later. It proved to be all for not as Colburn tallied exactly three minutes later, providing a cushion for Hobart that they utilized to kill the clock.
In attacking, the Statesmen elected on a couple of occasions to pull back from shooting and instead maintain possession. Then, with 1:37 remaining, Kirk intercepted an errant Loyola pass with first-year goalie Jake Hagelin (16 saves) stuck behind the net. Kirk walked in, faked out the defender blocking the goal, and put it home to complete the hat-trick.
Hobart outshot Loyola 41-34 and won 10 of 18 faceoffs. The Statesmen were 1 for 4 on the man up, while killing off all six of the Greyhounds opportunities.
Hobart will close out the regular season on May 2, when the Cornell Big Red visit McCooey Field for the 128th meeting in collegiate lacrosse’s oldest rivalry. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
