Herons edge Scranton in overtime, 2-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College soccer team began the 2008 season in exciting fashion, as sophomore forward Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) netted the game-winning goal with just 51 seconds remaining in the second overtime, to defeat Scranton 2-1 this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons, currently ranked sixth in the NSCAA's preseason poll, move to 1-0-0 on the season, while the Royals now stand at 0-1-0.

Nine minutes, 49 seconds into the game, William Smith first-year Jamie Sawyer (Farmington/Unionville, Conn.) connected on a leading pass from Nasypany for her first collegiate goal, giving the Herons an early 1-0 lead.

William Smith held that lead for the remainder of the half, and didn't allow a goal until the 76th minute. Scranton sophomore Chelsea Paskman (Central Bucks South/Chalfont, Pa.) lofted a shot over first-year Heron Amanda Davis' (Roxbury/Sucasunna, N.J.) head and into the back left corner of the net to even the contest at 1-1.

The Herons peppered the Royal's goalkeeper, sophomore Caitlin Byrne (IHA/East Rutherford, N.J.), in the waning minutes of the second half. Byrne made five of her 17 saves in the last 15 minutes of regulation, including one on a penalty kick from Nasypany, and continued to turn away William Smith's attempts for the first 19 minutes of extra time. Nasypany, who took 10 shots, finally got past Byrne with the game-winner after 109:09 minutes of action.

William Smith sophomore goalie Alex Chase (Bosque School/Albuquerque, N.M.) earned the start and the win, stopping two shots along the way. Davis recorded two stops as well.

The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 6, when they travel to Rochester to participate in the Nazareth Tournament. William Smith will face Allegheny on Saturday at 2 p.m.
