#19 Herons prevail over Bombers

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 19th-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Ithaca College 2-0 this afternoon on Cozzens Field, in the first game of the Heron Cup. The Herons improved to 3-1-0 overall, while the Bombers fell to 1-1-1 on the season.

Junior midfielder Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the seventh minute of action. She lofted a corner kick to the back right corner of the goal, and it deflected off of Ithaca's sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Sotomayor's (East Brunswick/East Brunswick, N.J.) hand and into the net.

The Herons held the 1-0 lead until 72:06, when first-year forward Jamie Sawyer (Farmington/Unionville, Conn.) took a hard shot that rebounded off of Sotomayor, and landed at the feet of junior midfielder Katelyn Tyson (Leland/San Jose, Calif.). Tyson collected the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net to give William Smith the 2-0 advantage.

The Bombers had multiple opportunities to score. In the first half, senior forward Chelsey Feldman (Lynbrook/Hewlett, N.Y.) had an open shot after a scramble in front of the goal moved sophomore Heron goalkeeper Alex Chase (Bosque School/Albuquerque, N.M.) out of position, but senior defender Ali Art (Herricks/Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) was there to make the team save.

Ithaca had two more similar opportunities on shots that came back-to-back in the 50th minute, but this time Tyson was there to make the two team saves.

Sotomayor was stellar in net; she finished the day with 10 saves. Chase recorded four saves in the first half, while first-year Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Sucasunna, N.J.) picked up two in the second.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 14, on Day 2 of the Heron Cup. The Bombers will take on Mount Saint Vincent at 11 a.m., followed by William
