Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) netted two goals to lift the 19th-ranked William Smith College soccer team over DeSales University 2-0 this afternoon, in the final game of the Heron Cup. The Herons improve to 4-1-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-2-1 overall.
After a scoreless first half, William Smith finally got a shot past DeSales' junior goalkeeper Katie Halpin (Notre Dame/Easton, Pa.) in the 52nd minute. First-year forward
Kate Redmond (Bernard/Bernardsville, N.J.) crossed the ball in front of the goal, where Nasypany collected it for a shot from 5 yards out.
At 82:04, it was Nasypany all by herself. After a long goal kick from sophomore Heron goalie
Alex Chase (Bosque School/Albuquerque, N.M.), Nasypany got loose on a fast break, beat two Bulldog defenders, and scored her second goal of the day to give William Smith the 2-0 lead. She leads the team with five goals so far this season.
Halpin finished with 12 saves for DeSales, nine of those coming in the second half, while first-year goalkeeper
Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Sucasunna, N.J.) picked up three saves for the Herons.
William Smith outshot its visitor 29-4, and had 12 corner kick opportunities to the Bulldogs' two.
The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 18, when they travel to Rochester for a non-league match at 4:30 p.m.
