Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked Hobart College soccer team defeated Clarkson 5-2 tonight, in the first Liberty League contest of the season for both teams. The Statesmen improve their undefeated mark to 8-0-0, while the Golden Knights drop to 5-3-1 overall.
Junior midfielder
Grant Morrison (Gleniffer/Paisley, Scotland) led Hobart's offense with two goals, while senior forward
Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist, and senior midfielder
Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen/Erlangen, Germany) posted two assists.
Just 7 minutes, 58 seconds into the match, Clarkson sophomore Jeremy Toscano (Brockport/Brockport, N.Y.) was red-carded, leaving the Golden Knights to play a man-down for the remainder of the game. Still, Clarkson got on the board first, as sophomore Andrew Esinger (Greece Arcadia/Rochester, N.Y.) headed the ball past senior Statesman goalkeeper
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) in the 14th minute of action. He was assisted by junior Matias Pena (Paul Schreiber/Port Washington, N.Y.).
Less than five minutes later, Hobart answered with the equalizer from Riso. He was set up by a corner kick from Schoeniger.
Junior
Matt Schwartz (Lower Merion/Wynnewood, Pa.) notched his first goal of the year at the 40:50 mark, after Schoeniger found him with a low crossed ball in front of the goal. The Statesmen took the 2-1 lead into halftime.
After the break, Morrison netted his first score of the day, as sophomore forward
Kevin McCarthy (Ocean City/Seaville, N.J.) took a hard shot that rebounded back to Morrison for the put-back in the 51st minute.
At 69:17 Hobart took a 4-1 advantage after first-year
Clancy Purcell (Shelton/Shelton, Conn.) tallied his first collegiate goal. He put in the rebound after a hard shot from Riso. Ten minutes later, Morrison scored his second goal of the day, assisted by junior midfielder
Tom Moulton (Providence Country Day/Coventry, R.I.).
Clarkson would put one more tally on the board at 81:03, as sophomore Cale Samuel (Abbleby/Mississauga, Ontario) scored on a penalty kick.
The Statesmen held a 26-9 advantage in shots, and took six corner kicks to the Golden Knights' one.
Van Dellon finished with four saves, while senior Clarkson goalie Mike St. Croix (Immaculate Heart/Watertown, N.Y.) recorded six saves.
The Statesmen will be in action again tomorrow, Sept. 27, when they host Liberty League rival St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.
