Field hockey suffers first loss in OT at RPI

Box Score TROY, N.Y.--The 11th-ranked William Smith field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season by a 3-2 count in overtime at Liberty League rival Rensselaer. The loss drops the Herons to 7-1 (1-1), while the Red Hawks improve to 7-2 (2-0).

Senior Jamie Tucciarone (Clinton/Clinton, N.Y.) gave William Smith a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, finishing a feed from classmate Kelsey Landahl (Pioneer/Delevan, N.Y.).

RPI pulled even 18 seconds before the break on a penalty corner goal by Sandy Turnbull, set up by Sara Stylinski.

The Herons held a 9-6 advantage on shots and a 7-6 edge in penalty corners in the opening frame.

In the 43rd minute, the Red Hawks took their first lead as Shaina Feldman put back a rebound for a 2-1 lead.

Tucciarone necessitated overtime with an unassisted tally in the 60th minute.

While the score was knotted 2-2 at the end of regulation, momentum swung in favor of the home team, which boasted a 12-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 lead in penalty corners in the second 35 minutes.

Kristiina Baker scored the game-winner in the 81st minute, assisted by Jessica Corrigan.

Senior goalie Katie DeKraker (Staples/Westport, Conn.) made nine saves for William Smith, while Briana Earle turned back 11 for Rensselaer.

The Herons are back in action on Oct. 1, when they host Rochester at 7 p.m.
