Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The 18th-ranked Hobart College soccer team used a swarming attack to overwhelm Utica College 2-0 on Cozzens Field today. Senior striker
Tyler Webster (Acton Boxborough/Acton, Mass.) netted both goals for the Statesmen.
Things got off to an ominous start as the leading edge of tropical storm Hanna began to drench the field as the referee signaled the start of the match.
Fourteen minutes later, it got worse for Hobart. Junior defender
Matt Geswell (Carmel/Patterson, N.Y.) grabbed a Pioneer player's jersey in an attempt to avert a breakaway opportunity. The referee immediate issued a red card, leaving the Statesmen a man down for the remainder of the match.
The disadvantage hardly seemed to matter, as Hobart outshot their guests 11-5 in the opening half and 16-10 for the match.
Webster notched his first tally in the 30th minute on an indirect kick just outside the Utica box. Senior
Dan Riso (Red Hook/Red Hook, N.Y.) touched the ball to classmate
Philipp Schoeniger (Erlangen, Germany), who teed it up for Webster. His shot rocketed through the box, redirecting off a player and ending up inside the far post.
In the 50th minute, Hobart (3-0-0) scored on another set piece. This time the Statesmen converted a corner kick, one of 11 they earned on the day against just five for Utica (1-2-0). First-year
Clancy Purcell (Shelton/Shelton, Conn.) crossed the corner to the far post where classmate
Chris King (Hauppauge/Hauppauge, N.Y.) headed it back towards the middle where Webster finished it from 6 yards out.
Senior goalie
Pete Van Dellon (Webster Thomas/Webster, N.Y.) earned his second shutout of the season with six saves. Utica first-year Ben Banker (Morrisville-Eaton/Morrisville, N.Y.) made two stops.
Hobart is back in action on Sept. 7, when the Statesmen host Elmira (2-0-0) at 2 p.m.
