DeCroo nets hat trick in win over Morrisville

Box Score Morrisville, N.Y.—Junior Nick DeCroo (Sarver, Pa.) scored three goals to lift the Hobart College hockey team over Morrisville State 5-3 tonight in a non-conference game at the Morrisville Ice Plex. The ninth-ranked Statesmen improve to 11-4-0 overall, while the Mustangs drop to 4-11-1 on the season.

Along with DeCroo's three tallies, junior Aleksey Koval (Kiev, Ukraine) and sophomore Pat Moriarty (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) scored for Hobart, while junior Bobby Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and sophomore Tom Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) added three and two assists, respectively.

Cahill found DeCroo for the first goal of the contest just 44 seconds into the first period. Morrisville responded two minutes later, as Geoff Matzel evened the game at 1-1 on a power play. He was the first of eight different players to record a point for the Mustangs tonight.

Morrisville scored twice more in the first period, thanks to Kyle Roberts and Dana Calderon, and held a 3-1 lead at the start of the second stanza.

The Statesmen took over from there. Six minutes into the second period, Moriarty lit the lamp to cut the lead to one. Sophomore Matt Wallace (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and first-year Greg Ciciola (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) assisted on the play. Koval tied things up with a helper from senior Jason Merritt (Chapel Hill, N.C.) at the 11:43 mark, and DeCroo scored his second goal, the game-winner, at 17:38 to give Hobart a 4-3 lead.

DeCroo tallied once more in the third period to ensure the victory, converting a power play opportunity. He now leads the team with 12 goals and 17 points. Cahill and Capalbo both recorded assists on DeCroo's final two goals.

Hobart outshot Morrisville 51-27. Senior goalie Keith Longo (Milford, Mass.) collected 24 saves for the Statesmen, while Caylin Relkoff stopped 46 shots for the Mustangs.

Hobart will be back in action on Jan. 17, when they host Geneseo State for a non-league contest in The Cooler at 7 p.m. Listen to the game live on WHWS-FM (105.7), or follow along online with live stats.
