Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.—Evan Grey's goal in the 109th minute gave Hobart a thrilling 3-2 double overtime victory at conference rival Clarkson this afternoon and provided
Shawn Griffin with his 100th win as head coach of the Statesmen. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 9-1-2 overall, 3-1-0 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights slip to 5-6-1, 0-4-0.
Precipitated by a Hobart direct kick, Grey finished a scramble in the penalty area, knocking home his second goal of the season off an assist from
Andrew Steates.
The teams were locked up in a defensive struggle in the first half. Clarkson held an 8-6 lead in shot at halftime (Hobart was outshot 20-17 for the match.), but neither team found the back of the net in the first stanza.
Offense ruled the second half.
In the 50th minute,
Will Abbott won a foot race with Clarkson goalie Saverino Spagnola (5 saves). He beat the first-year to a ball just outside the Knight's penalty area and scored his fifth goal of the year on a long shot.
Kevin McCarthy earned an assist on the play.
Clarkson pulled even in the 66th minute. Elliot Carter took a shot that
Charlie Hale (6 saves) saved, but the rebound came to Tobin Boomer who drove it home for his first goal of the season.
Grey helped Hobart retake the lead in the 74th minute, serving a ball in front of the goal that
Chris King headed home for a 2-1 lead.
The Knights kept their upset hopes alive thanks to Phil Boyd's header goal in the 81st minute that forced overtime.
Now in his 10th season at Hobart, Griffin is 100-65-21 (.594) with the Statesmen. Coupled with eight seasons as the head coach at Plymouth State, his overall record stands at 192-110-30 (.623).
Hobart will be back in action on Oct. 14, when the Statesmen visit Ithaca. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
