Field hockey completes Liberty League weekend sweep

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith field hockey team completed a Liberty League weekend sweep with a 4-0 triumph over Vassar today on McCooey Field. The Herons improved their all-time record against the Brewers to 10-0, including seven straight shutouts.

Emily Atwan netted an unassisted goal just 5 minutes, 24 seconds into the match for the game-winner. It was her ninth goal of the season. In the 26th minute, Annie Kietzman doubled the Herons' advantage, finishing a feed from Kaitlyn Hamilton.

William Smith (8-4, 2-3) carried the 2-0 lead into halftime. The Herons outshot the Brewers 7-1 in the first 35 minutes (16-1 for the match).

In the 51st minute, Katie Baxter was robbed of her first goal of the season by a fine defense save by first-year midfielder Rebecca Smith. Two minutes later, Sarah Gall broke through for her first marker of the year to put the home team up 3-0. Kiersten Hamilton, assisted by Janelle Walkley, closed out the days scoring, driving home her sixth goal of the year in the match's 62nd minute.

Heron goalie Chelsea Snyder earned the shutout with a single first half save, while junior goalie Rachel Horwitz made five saves against nine shots in 64 minutes of work for Vassar (2-12, 0-5).

William Smith is back in action at 4 p.m. on Oct. 13, when the Herons host Cortland State. The Brewers will visit New Paltz State for their next match on Oct. 14.
