Heron field hockey falls to LVC, 3-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Seventh-ranked Lebanon Valley topped William Smith 3-1 in a non-conference field hockey match at McCooey Field this afternoon. The win is the 12th in a row for the Flying Dutchmen, raising their record to 13-1, while the Herons slip to 8-6.

LVC opened the day's scoring in the 22nd minute, when Shelly Lobach's shot deflected up in the air off a Heron stick and looped over William Smith first-year goalie Taryn Little. Little, who did not allow another goal before the break, finished with nine saves.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 43rd minute when Jocelyn Novak's long diagonal pass found Cait Eckenrode, who fired home a shot from the left wing. In the 54th minute, Lebanon Valley made it 3-0 on Avery Carter's penalty corner blast. The goal was assisted by Nikki Bomberger.

With just 2:27 remaining, William Smith broke up the shutout. On a penalty corner, senior Janelle Walkley blasted a shot from the top of the circle that sophomore Kiersten Hamilton tipped home for her eighth goal of the season.

The Flying Dutchmen held a 14-12 advantage in shots and a 10-8 edge in penalty corners. Caitlin Baro made five saves to earn the victory.

The Herons will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Oct. 24, when they host Skidmore.
