Late goal gives Red Dragons 1-0 win over Herons

Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team fell to Oneonta State today, 1-0. The Herons slip to 9-3-1 on the season, while the Red Dragons improve to 10-2-2 overall.

A late goal gave the hosts the edge. In the 83rd minute, Red Dragon Caitlin Burke took a shot from the right side. Her shot appeared to be headed wide, but it deflected off a William Smith defender, hit the inside of the far post, and went into the net. Beth Cherry assisted on the play.

The Red Dragons held the Herons to just two shots, while taking 11 of their own. Only three of those were on goal. Oneonta also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

William Smith sophomore goalie Amanda Davis recorded two saves on the day.

The Herons will be back in action on Oct. 24, when they host Skidmore for a Liberty League match at 3 p.m.
