Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team opened the 2009-10 season with a 2-2 overtime draw at Buffalo State tonight. Both the Statesmen and the Bengals now stand at 0-0-1 on the season.
Hobart was down 2-1 late in the third period, and pulled first-year goalie
Nick Broadwater for the final minutes to put the offensive pressure on. The tactic worked, as first-year
Chris Cannizzaro finally broke through for the Statesmen with just 48 seconds on the clock, tying the game at 2-all and forcing overtime. Juniors
Tommy Capalbo and
Matthew Wallace recorded the assists.
Junior
Danny Organ netted a shorthanded tally for the first goal of the night. He got loose on a breakaway at 16:16 in the second period, scoring on a well-placed shot over the shoulder of Buffalo State goaltender Alan Fritch. Senior
Gregory Alberti picked up the helper.
Twenty-eight seconds later, D'Arcy Thomas answered for the Bengals, evening the game at 1-all. The power-play goal was set up by Nick Petriello and Joel Sheppard.
With just over seven minutes to play in regulation, Kyle Granville put Buffalo State on top 2-1 with an unassisted shorthanded goal of his own, but the lead would not stand up.
Broadwater collected 20 saves in his first contest as a Statesman, including a clutch stop in the final seconds of regulation. Granville came at him with a one-on-one breakaway shot, but Broadwater made the save to preserve the tie and ensure extra time.
Fritch posted a solid night, collecting 42 saves for the Bengals. Hobart held a lopsided 44-22 advantage in shots.
The Statesmen were 0-for-6 on the power play, while Buffalo State was 1-for-5.
Hobart will host the Bengals in The Cooler tomorrow, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. Fans unable to make it to the game can listen live on
