Union rallies past William Smith 3-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Union field hockey team locked up the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Championship Tournament with a 3-1 victory over William Smith. The Herons held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but the Dutchwomen rallied for three unanswered, second-half tallies.

William Smith (8-8, 2-5) opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Senior Kaitlyn Hamilton sent a right-to-left diagonal pass to her sister, sophomore Kiersten Hamilton, who sent it on to Annie Kietzman right in front of the cage. The first-year moved into a tie for the team lead with her ninth goal of the season.

Union (9-7, 4-3) had its best chance to score in the first half thwarted by a great diving save by first-year goalie Taryn Little. A scramble in front of the Heron cage forced William Smith to cover the ball, resulting in a penalty stroke for the Dutchwomen. Tyler Willey sent a shot toward the lower left corner of the cage, but Little made her fourth save of the session to preserve the William Smith lead. She finished the match with seven stops.

The Herons controlled the first half, outshooting their guests 18-5 with an 8-1 advantage on penalty corners.

In the 45th minute, Union evened the match when Kelsey Powers batted home her own rebound. The Dutchwomen took the lead in the 61st minute on a penalty corner when Tyler Willey set up Powers in the left slot. Thirty seconds later, Powers assisted on Lizzy Moran's insurance goal.

William Smith put three shots on frame in the final nine minutes, but couldn't solve Union goalie Sarah Rios, who finished the contest with 17 saves.

The Herons will wrap up their regular season at 2 p.m. on Oct. 31 when they host Geneseo St. The Dutchwomen will conclude their regular season slate at 4 p.m. on Oct. 30, when they visit New Paltz St.
