Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked Hobart College hockey team fell to 12th-ranked Manhattanville 4-2 tonight at The Cooler, in the first ECAC West game for both teams. The Statesmen slip to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the league, while the Valiants improve to 1-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the ECAC West.
Manhattanville struck first, with two goals in the first period. Niklas Berntsson scored off assists from Matt Piegza and Evan Michalchuk just over seven minutes into the game. Scott Hudson followed with a goal at 15:36 to put the Valiants up 2-0. Mickey Lang and Arlen Marshall recorded the assists.
The Valiants increased their lead to 3-0 4:30 into the second period. This time it was Danny Genovese with the tally, assisted by Berntsson and Michalchuk.
The Statesmen finally got on the board in the third period, when senior
Nick DeCroo netted a shorthanded goal at the 3:29 mark. Just over a minute later, Lang answered for Manhattanville, putting the visitors back up by three, 4-1. Lang was assisted by Dillon O'Hara and Hudson.
Hobart put the pressure on for the remainder of the period, outshooting the Valiants 13-5 in the stanza. The Statesmen tallied one more time, thanks to a goal from senior
Aleksey Koval at 15:48, but would not overcome their deficit. Junior
Danny Organ set up Koval's goal.
First-year goalie
Nick Broadwater collected 26 saves for Hobart, while Pierre Olivier Lemieux stopped 29 shots for Manhattanville.
Both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Hobart held a slight 31-30 edge in shots.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Nov. 6, when they travel to Geneseo State for a non-league contest at 7 p.m.
