Statesmen beat Dickinson in Pizza Hut Tip-Off opener

Box Score CARLISLE, Pa.—The Hobart basketball team picked up its first win of the season tonight, defeating Dickinson 60-51 in the first round of the Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament. Matt Pebole led the Statesmen with a game-high 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Hobart (1-1) jumped out to a 9-0 lead on a three by Mark Bruce followed by three straight baskets by Pebole. The Red Devils (0-1) countered with an 18-5 run to take an 18-16 lead with 9:35 remaining in the first half. Pebole scored on back-to-back possessions to put the Statesmen back in front, kicking off an 8-0 run.

Hobart took a 28-22 lead into halftime. Pebole led all scorers at the break with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting with a three-pointer.

The Statesmen started the second half with a 14-3 run to build a 17-point advantage, 42-25, with 14:10 left. Dickinson attempted to get back in the contest with a 12-2 run that cut its deficit to seven, 44-37, with 8:40 to go, but the Statesmen kept the Red Devils are arm's length down the stretch.

Stefan Thompson scored Hobart's final 10 points and 12 of its last 16, to secure the victory. He finished the night 12-of-14 from the free throw line. Rezin Davis also reached double figures for the Statesmen, posting 12 points.

Chris Barsanti led the Red Devils with 12 points, hitting 7-of-7 free throws on the night. Juniors Matt Dolan and Chris Harrington each added 10 points and combined for nine rebounds.

The Red Devils will face Penn State York (0-3) in the consolation game at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 22. Hobart will take on Alfred in the championship at 3:30 p.m. The Saxons advanced to the final with an 81-54 decision in the other semifinal.
