Statesmen post comeback victory over Utica, 6-4

UTICA, N.Y.—The Hobart College hockey team scored four goals in the final period, including three in a two minute span, to grab a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over Utica in an ECAC West contest at The Memorial Auditorium tonight. The Statesmen improve to 4-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the ECAC West, while the Pioneers slip to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in the league.

After netting three power-play goals in the second period, Utica held a 4-2 lead at the start of the third. Hobart rallied, posting a 17-5 advantage in shots in the stanza, and it paid off. Sophomore Gregory Ciciola started the scoring frenzy 6 minutes, 38 seconds in, off an assist from senior Blake Bonham, to put the Statesmen back with in one, 4-3.

Senior Aleksey Koval evened the game at the 8:16 mark, set up by first-year Chris Cannizzaro and senior Bobby Cahill. Just 19 seconds later, Cannizzaro found Cahill for the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner.

After starting the Hobart scoring with a power-play tally in the 19th minute of the game, junior Matthew Wallace netted his second goal of the night, and team-leading eighth of the season, with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to give the Statesmen a two point cushion.

Junior Danny Organ also scored for Hobart tonight, and finished with a goal and an assist, while first-year Ryan Corcoran chipped in with two helpers. Tim Coffman led Utica with two goals, and Matt Fitzgibbons added two assists.

Overall, the Statesmen outshot the Pioneers 39-17. Hobart was 1-for-3 on power play opportunities, while Utica was 3-for-7.

Statesmen first-year goalie Nick Broadwater collected 13 saves for his third win of the season, while Anthony Luckow stopped 33 shots for the Pioneers.

Hobart will be in action again tomorrow, Dec. 5, when the Statesmen travel to 11th-ranked Manhattanville for another ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
