Thompson leads Statesmen to dominant win over Cazenovia

Box Score CAZENOVIA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team led host Cazenovia for all but the opening two minutes, as the Statesmen dominated the Wildcats 87-61. Hobart improved its record to 4-2, while Cazenovia remains winless at 0-6.

The Statesmen shot 44.8 percent from the floor, while limiting the Wildcats to 38.8 percent. Hobart made nearly three times as many free throws (23) as Cazenovia attempted (8). In fact, the Statesmen could have enjoyed a much more lopsided victory with an average day at the line. Hobart made just 53.5 percent of its tries from the stripe.

First-year Stefan Thompson led the Statesmen with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 9-of-13 from the line. Sophomore Matt Pebole notched his second double-double in as many games with 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior Mark Bruce also reached double figures, contributing 10 points.

The Wildcats scored the first four points of the game, but Hobart responded with the contest's next 13 to take what proved to be an insurmountable lead. The Statesmen led by as many as 12 in the opening 20 minuntes, but Cazenovia managed to whittle that down to just two at the 8-minute mark. Pebole hit a layup and a three to stretch the lead back to seven, 33-26, with 7:09 left to play.

Hobart carried a 42-35 lead into halftime.

Following a Pebole layup, Bryant Winans (5 pts) hit a three in the first minute of the second half to get the Wildcats within six, but the home team got no closer. Hobart led by as many as 28 down the stretch, earning its third consecutive win.

Darnell Sampson was the only Cazenovia player in double figures (19 pts).

The Statesmen will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Dec. 9, when they host Rochester.
