St. Lawrence holds off Hobart, 70-65

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—St. Lawrence controlled the paint, outscoring Hobart 42-26 in the low post and enjoying a 47-33 advantage on the glass, en route to a 70-65 win over the Statesmen in a Liberty League men's basketball showdown.

Hobart sophomore guard Tim Llewellyn (West York/York, Pa.) and first-year forward Matt Pebole (Red Bank/Little Silver, N.J.) shared game-high honors with 15 points apiece. Llewellyn also added five assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Rob Estep (West York/York, Pa.) chipped in 13 points, while first-year forward Mark Bertucci (Fairport/Fairport, N.Y.) blocked four shots to go with six points and four boats.

Senior guard Tom Wopperer Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius, N.Y.) and first-year guard Garrett Sharlow (Massena/Massena, N.Y.) paced four Saints in double figures with 12 points apiece, while senior forward Bela Vonnak (Canajoharie/Canajoharie, N.Y.) and senior forward Richard Williams (Kingston/Kingston, N.Y.) both produced 11 points and eight rebounds.

St. Lawrence, which won for the seventh straight time, ended the first half on a 12-4 run for a 40-33 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half. The Statesmen (7-14, 4-6) trimmed their deficit to three five times in the final 15 minutes of the contest, but were unable to get any closer.

Hobart was able to keep the contest close by forcing the Saints (17-4, 10-1) into 18 turnovers

The Statesmen are back in action at 4 p.m. on Feb. 14, when they host Clarkson (13-9, 4-7), while St. Lawrence will visit Hamilton at the same time.
