Knights edge Statesmen in overtime

Box Score The sixth-ranked Hobart College hockey team fell to Neumann 4-3 in overtime tonight in an ECAC West contest in The Cooler. The Statesmen drop to 17-5-0 overall and 8-4-0 in the conference, while the Knights improve to 12-8-2 on the season and 6-4-2 in the ECAC West.

A power-play tally by Erik Stoyanovich with 39 seconds remaining in overtime proved to be the difference. After an untimely penalty called on Hobart with 1 minute, 7 seconds to go, Sean Bianchini took a shot that rebounded back to Stoyanovich for the put-away.

Neumann started the scoring just 1:10 into the game, as Marlon Gardner tipped in a rebounded shot from Bianchini. Jesse Cole also picked up an assist on the play.

Hobart finally broke through in the second period, thanks to sophomore Tom Capalbo (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), junior Bobby Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich.), and senior Michael Steiner (Shaker Heights, Ohio). Steiner passed the puck up to Cahill for a breakaway, and Capalbo was there to put it away on the cross crease pass at the 4:34 mark. The goal tied the game at 1-all.

Nick Lapeirre put the Knights back in front with just over four minutes to play in the second period, as he netted the rebound from his own shot. Neumann held a 2-1 lead heading into the final break.

In the third period, the Knights increased their lead to 3-1 following a tally from Matt Ward. However, the Statesmen answered with back-to-back goals from juniors Nick DeCroo (Sarver, Pa.) and Aleksey Koval (Kiev, Ukraine) in the seventh and eighth minutes to even the game at 3-all and force the eventual overtime period.

Senior goalie Keith Longo (Milford, Mass.) collected 34 saves for Hobart, while Ross MacKinnon stopped 43 shots for the Knights.

Hobart will be back on the ice tomorrow, Feb. 14, when the Statesmen and Knights face off again at 4 p.m.
