Jensen’s goal lifts #5 Herons over Yellowjackets in 2OT

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—First-year Renee Jensen scored in the 108th minute to lift the fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team over Rochester 1-0 in double-overtime tonight on Cozzens Field. The Herons improve to 4-2-0 on the season, while the Yellowjackets suffer their first loss of the year, moving to 3-1-2 overall.

After more than 107 minutes of scoreless, back-and-forth action, junior BreLynn Nasypany broke free from the Rochester defense and carried the ball up the left side of the field. She found sophomore Chelsea England#, who ripped a shot that was saved by Yellowjacket goalie Celeste Hornbach. Hornbach could not control the ball, and it rebounded back to Jensen for the game-winning shot from two yards out.

Both teams had chances to score throughout the match. William Smith had two quick shots in the 35th minute from sophomore Leah Shatkin and first-year Emily D'Addario, following a corner kick by England. Earlier, in the 12th minute, one of Rochester's best chances came on a cross to Ellen Coleman. Coleman was on track for a header on a wide open net, but sophomore Heron goalie Amanda Davis came out just in time to punch it away.

With less than four minutes remaining in regulation, the Yellowjackets threatened again as Mae Butler booted a free kick deep into the box that nearly found teammate Bridgette Varin for a shot on goal, but again Davis got there first to squelch the attempt.

Davis finished with four saves in her third shutout of the season, while Hornbach collected 10 stops for Rochester.

The Herons outshot their visitors 21-10, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

William Smith will be back in action on Sept. 25, when the Herons travel to Vassar for their first Liberty League match of the season at 4 p.m.
