COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—The 17th-ranked William Smith field hockey team ran into a buzz saw this afternoon as fourth-ranked Ursinus handed the Herons a 4-0 non-conference loss. With their 12th consecutive victory, the Bears improved to 12-1, while William Smith slips to 10-4.
Ursinus seized control of the contest early and never looked back. The Bears outshot the Herons 24-10, including 11-7 in the first half. Jennifer Bayzick got the home team on the board, scoring off a penalty corner in the fifth minute. In the 26th minute, Michelle Wimmer converted a penalty stroke to double the home team's lead. Ursinus carried a 3-0 lead into halftime after Bayzick connected in the 34th minute.
William Smith's best scoring chance came early in the second half. Just 73 seconds into the session, first-year
Melanie O'Connor fired a shot on frame, but Nicole Hanby's defensive save spoiled the would-be goal.
The Bears closed out the scoring in the 69th minute on a strike by Catherine Bitterly.
Ursinus' LauraLee Lightwood-Mater made six saves to earn the victory in goal. For the Herons, sophomore
Taryn Little made five saves in the first half, while senior
Chelsea Snyder turned back two shots in the second half.
William Smith will continue its four-game road trip on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when the Herons visit Cortland. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
