#7 Herons, Continentals battle to scoreless draw

Box Score Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—
The 7th-ranked William Smith soccer team played visiting Hamilton to a scoreless draw on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the result, the Herons move to 7-2-2 (1-0-2 in the Liberty League), while the Continentals are 5-1-2 (1-1-1).

The first scoring chance belonged to Hamilton in the 12th minute. Senior striker Lauren Farver caught William Smith junior goalie Amanda Davis moving to her left. Farver laced a shot toward the far post, but Davis was able to dive back against her momentum and alter the trajectory just enough to push it outside the post.

The rest of regulation and most of overtime belonged to the Herons. William Smith outshot Hamilton 24-7, but couldn't get one past first-year goalie Liza Gergenti. The Herons forced Gergenti to make several diving stops on her way to an 11-save performance.

William Smith came closest to scoring in the 86th minute when junior midfielder Jamie Sawyer's header hit the crossbar.

Gergenti made one save in the first overtime and two more in the second while Davis' second and final save came in the second OT.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 8, when Vassar visits Cozzens Field. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
