POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 10 William Smith soccer team defeated host Clarkson University 2-0 in a Liberty League contest played at Hantz Turf Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons clinched home-field advantage and the top seed in the Liberty League playoffs.
The Herons improve to 12-2-2 overall and 5-0-2 in league play. William Smith has not lost a regular season Liberty League match since 2006. The Herons regular season league record now stands at 22-0-6 over the past four seasons. The Golden Knights fell to 4-12-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the Liberty League.
The Herons came out with a quick pace to start the second half, and took little time to break the scoreless tie. Senior
Brelynn Nasypany tried to take a shot in front with a defender at her side and Clarkson senior keeper Stephanie Collins protecting the goal. Collins was able to push the ball aside. The ball ricocheted over to sophomore
Whitney Frary who was able to complete the play with a quick shot into a nearly empty net at 46:50. It was her fourth goal of the season.
With less than 10 minutes to go, William Smith picked up an insurance goal to clinch the victory. Nasypany dribbled down the left side and took a hard shot from outside the box that Collins was able to deflect, but sophomore
Morgan Gibeault crashed the net and redirected the ball in with her body for her fourth goal of the year.
Nasypany has a total of 27 career assists which ranks third on the William Smith program list. Her 127 career points put her second all-time.
Clarkson had just a single shot in the second half, but it nearly cut the lead in half. Senior Ariana Czech beat a defender and the goalkeeper, but a hard shot to the near post sailed just wide with a few moments remaining in the game.
William Smith out shot Clarkson 9-4, and held a 4-0 lead in corner kicks. Collins made six saves, all in the second half, for the Golden Knights. Junior goalie
Amanda Davis played the opening 73:22 in goal for the Herons and stopped three shots. First-year
Chelsea Dunay came in to play the final 16:38.
William Smith will wrap up its regular season with a non-league game at RIT on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m.
