TROY, N.Y.—The Rensselaer men's soccer team scored in the 74th minute to defeat Hobart 1-0 in a Liberty League contest played at Renwyck Field this afternoon. The Engineers improve to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the league, while the Statesmen are now 6-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in league play.
Rensselaer senior Benjamin Poser broke the scoreless tie on a free kick from the edge of the penalty area. Rensselaer earned the free kick after Hobart junior goalkeeper
Charlie Hale inadvertently picked up the ball a step outside his penalty area. Poser's shot ricocheted off the crossbar and in behind Hale. The goal was Poser's second of the season.
The eventual game-winning tally came just five minutes after the Statesmen were reduced to 10 men on a second yellow card issued to first-year
Kaeghan Kelly
Hobart only took one shot over the final 16 minutes as the Engineers were able to hold on for the win.
The most dangerous first opportunity came in the 12th minute, when Poser took a centering pass from sophomore Adam Updegrove and fired from 25 yards out, but Hale was there for the diving save.
An evenly played first 45 minutes saw the Statesmen hold a 5-3 shots advantage, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. All four of those shots came in a four-minute flurry, in which RPI senior netminder Alex Penny was able to stop them all.
Hale finished with four saves. Penny also recorded four saves in goal for Rensselaer. The Engineers held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Statesmen will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 13, when they host Ithaca for a non-league game beginning at 4 p.m.
