Hobart edged by Utica in season opener

GENEVA, N.Y.—
The Hobart College hockey team rallied with a goal in the third period, but could not tie up the game, as the Statesmen fell to Utica College 3-2 in their season opener at The Cooler tonight. The game as also the first ECAC West game for both teams. Hobart is now 0-1-0, and 0-1-0 in conference play, while Utica improves to 4-0-0 and 1-0-0 in the ECAC West.

Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead 14 minutes, 28 seconds into the first period. Sophomore Robert Etts scored off assists from sophomore Evan Chlanda and first-year Steve Charest. The Pioneers added to their lead when first-year Chris Santiago fired a shot into the back of the net 5:30 into the second period. First-year Jon Gaffney and sophomore Eric Peterson were credited with assists.

The Statesmen got on the scoreboard 3:20 later. Sophomore Bobby Hannah scored his first goal of the season off assists from senior Danny Organ and sophomore Cam Miller to make the score 2-1.The Pioneers made it 3-1 when Petersen scored a goal of his own 11:40 into the second. Gaffney and Santiago earned assists.

The Statesmen rallied in the third period. Senior Christopher Bower put Hobart within one with his power-play goal 7:58 into the period. Sophomore Ryan Corcoran and senior Tommy Capalbo were credited with assists. The Statesmen held a 32-26 edge in shots and outshot the Pioneers 13-4 in the third period, but could not find the equalizer.

Sophomore goalie Nick Broadwater finished with 23 saves in goal for Hobart. First-year goalie Nick Therrin tallied 30 saves for Utica. The Statesmen were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Pioneers were 0-5.

Hobart will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 6, when the Statesmen host Manhattanville for another ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
