GENEVA, N.Y.—The Statesmen defeated the top-ranked team in the country for the second time in program history, earning a 5-2 win over No. 1 Oswego in a non-conference game at The Cooler tonight. Hobart improves to 5-3-1, and served the Lakers their first loss of the season.

The Statesmen scored just 36 seconds into the contest. Senior Josh Taylor fired a shot on goal that was saved, but senior Matthew Wallace was there to collect the rebound and find the back of the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Junior Gregory Ciciola also earned an assist.

Oswego (12-1-0) tied up the game at one 12:48 into the first, when Stephen Mallaro capitalized on a power play. Ian Boots earned the assist.

Hobart came out strong in the second period, scoring two goals early. At 1:09 in sophomore Cam Miller got the puck after a faceoff. Miller ripped a one-timer just inside the right post. While on a two-man advantage, sophomore Frank Salituro crushed a slap shot from the right side inside the right post after passes from sophomore Mike White and sophomore Ryan Corcoran to give Hobart a 3-1 lead.

At 14:22 in the second stanza, the Lakers cut their deficit to one. With a 5-on-3 advantage, Luke Moodie capitalized on a Jon Whitelaws rebound. Paul Rodrigues also earned an assist. The Lakers had a chance to score in the final period, but sophomore Nick Broadwater stopped a one-on-one shorthanded attempt. Broadwater finished with 25 saves.

That was as close as Oswego would get, as the Statesmen scored two more goals in the final period. At 11:40, sophomore Brad Richard ripped a shot from the blue line for his second goal this season. Sophomores Harry Radovich and David Stevens earned the assists. With 1:08 left in the game, Corcoran capitalized on a 5-on-3 situation for the final margin. Senior Tommy Capalbo and Salituro were credited with assists.

Hobart enjoyed a 42-27 advantage in shots. Oswego's goalie Dan Jones finished with 37 saves. The Statesmen were 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Lakers capitalized on two out of their six power play opportunities.

Hobart earned its first win over the No. 1 team in the nation with a 5-2 victory over Manhattanville on Jan. 22, 2005.

The Statesmen will return to action on Dec. 30, when they travel to Oswego, N.Y. to compete in the Pathfiner Bank Oswego Hockey Classic. Hobart will take on Wis.-Stevens Point at 4 p.m.
