Herons win season finale in double OT

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team ended the 2009-10 season on a high note, rallying for a 70-63 double overtime victory at Vassar. Sophomore Kristen Kush led four Herons in double figures with a team-high 16 points.

For 38 minutes today, the Brewers kept the Herons at arm's length. Vassar led by as many as nine in the contest and still sported a 53-48 advantage with 2:51 remaining in regulation. Twenty-seven seconds later, first-year Sydni Salvatore sank a pair of free throws to trim William Smith's deficit to three.

On the ensuing Vassar possession, first-year Chelsea Tracy came up with a steal that led to classmate Jaimie Rubin's basket at the other end of the floor to make it a one-point game at the 2:05 mark. The Brewers missed two shots to add to their lead before Tracy grabbed a rebound for the Herons.

William Smith took its first lead of the contest with just 73 seconds left in regulation on a layup by junior Ashlinn Barber. Vassar was unable to get a shot off over the next 53 seconds, committing two turnovers, and the Brewers were forced to foul, sending Salvatore to the line where she hit the back end of a two-shot foul with 20 seconds to play, giving the Herons a 55-53 lead.

Tori Chaltain converted a layup with seven seconds left in the half, snapping a shooting slump that saw Vassar go nearly six minutes between field goals. Barber got a shot off before the buzzer but it was off the mark, necessitating overtime.

In the first extra session, the teams traded the lead back and forth before Salvatore made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to put the Herons in front 61-59. Brewers' senior Emily Haeuser earned a trip to the line with three seconds left and sank both shots to extend the game another five minutes.

William Smith made sure the second overtime was far less dramatic than the first. A pair of threes by Salvatore, the Herons first from behind the arc of the game, keyed a 9-0 run that put the visitors in front 70-61 with 3:06 remaining. Thirty-seven seconds later, Haeuser made a jumper for Vassar's only points of the session. In the final five minutes, the Brewers were just 1-of-5 from the floor with four turnovers.

Kush made 7-of-15 shots on the day and grabbed seven rebounds and four steals. Salvatore posted a season-high 15 points, as well as three rebounds and three steals. Tracy also produced a season-high, two in fact, with 12 points and a game-high seven steals. Barber notched her eighth double-double of the season on 11 points and a team-high 15 rebounds.

Haeuser also registered a double-double with game-highs of 26 points and 18 rebounds. Brittany Parks joined her in double figures with 14 points, while Chaltain added 10 rebounds. The Brewers dominated the glass, outrebounding the Herons 53-37, but coughed up the ball 35 times compared to just 19 turnovers for William Smith. The Herons logged a season-high 20 steals in the game.

William Smith finished the season with an 8-16 record, including a 4-10 mark in the Liberty League.
