Statesmen breeze to win over Alfred

Box Score ALFRED, NY - Senior Kevin McCarthy contributed two goals and an assist to lead the Hobart offense in a 6-0 non-conference win over host Alfred University at Merrill Field. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Statesmen (1-0 overall) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Evan Grey 17 minutes, 40 seconds in. McCarthy was credited with the assist. McCarthy then scored back-to-back goals of his own. The first came at 40:11 off an assist from first-year Shayan Mosavi, and the second at 68:19 after a pass from sophomore Will Abbott.

Sophomore Alex Kittelberger found the back of the net to make the score 4-0 at 73:55. Sophomore Taylor Jones earned the assist. First-year Andrew Malordy scored his first collegiate goal off Abbott's second assist of the game 4:01 later. In the 82nd minute, Abbott scored an unassisted goal for the final margin.

Junior Charlie Hale played the first 83:08 in goal for Hobart and had two saves. Sophomore Stephen Bruening played the final 6:52. Alfred's junior goalkeeper, Elliot Thorpe, made eight saves in 81:16, and first-year Samel Guy had one save in the final 8:44.

The Statesmen enjoyed a 20-6 advantage in shots. Hobart recorded seven corner kicks, while Alfred had just two.

The Statesmen will return to action on Sept. 3, when they travel to play a non-conference game against Messiah.
