ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The No. 17 Hobart soccer team played through two overtime periods to a 1-1 tie with No. 8 Rochester tonight in a non-conference game played at Fauver Stadium. The Statesmen are now 4-1-1 overall, and Rochester is now 4-0-2.
After a scoreless first period, Rochester scored first in the 54th minute. A shot by sophomore Steve Welles from the top of the box was deflected into the goal. It was his first goal of the season.
At the 79:38 mark, sophomore
Ian McGarty scored his first goal of the season on a header after a Hobart throw in from the left side. Senior
Justin Dotzman was credited with the assist. The goal tied the score at one and sent the game into overtime.
The Statesmen had a scoring opportunity in the 97th minute when junior
Evan Grey fired a shot on goal, but Rochester's sophomore goalie Scott Garfing was there to make the save. A little over a minute later, Hobart had another chance, but a shot by sophomore
Reuben Burk was blocked by one of the Yellowjackets. Rochester had two shots on goal in the first overtime period, but Hobart's junior goalie
Charlie Hale was there to make the save on both attempts.
The Statesmen started off double overtime with three shots in the first two minutes. A shot by sophomore
Will Abbott was saved, and one by junior
Tony Yeboah was blocked. Junior
Tommy Hayes fired a shot that went wide of the goal. In the 104th minute, Hobart earned a corner kick, but was not able to capitalize on it.
A little over a minute later, a header by junior Robert Eberhardt went wide of the goal, and Rochester earned a corner kick of their own. The Yellowjackets had one more opportunity with 30 seconds left in the final overtime period, but a header by senior Chris Blivin sailed high above the goal.
Hobart recorded a 24-21 edge in shots and an 11-7 advantage in corner kicks. Hale played all 110 minutes in goal for the Statesmen and finished with seven saves. Garfing tallied six saves for Rochester.
The Statesmen return to action on Sept. 24, when they open Liberty League play at home against Skidmore.
