Herons fall in conference opener at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—
The 15th-ranked William Smith field hockey team lost its Liberty League opener today 5-0 at 14th-ranked Skidmore. The Herons' first loss of the season snaps an eight-match winning streak and drops their record to 7-1, while the Thoroughbreds improve to 5-1, 2-0 in the conference.

Less than two minutes into the contest, Skidmore seized the lead on a goal by Christine Kemp and before another two minutes could run off the clock, Kemp assisted on a goal by Kelly Blackhurst. Annie Rosencrans made it a 3-0 game in the 24th minute and posted her second assist of the day on Caylyn Sullivan's strike in the 28th minute to send the home team into the break with a 4-0 lead.

In the second half, Blackhurst completed the day's scoring on a penalty corner in the 56th minute.

The Thoroughbreds had a commanding 23-8 advantage in shots, and a 13-7 edge in penalty corners.

Heron sophomore Taryn Little made two saves in the first half and took the loss, while senior Chelsea Snyder turned back nine shots in the second half. Liz Catinella and Allie Sosinsky combined to make four saves for Skidmore.

William Smith will continue league play on Saturday, Sept. 25, when they visit Union (3-2, 1-1). That match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
