Herons tie Thoroughbreds 1-1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. –
The No. 6 William Smith soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 1-1 tie in double overtime with Skidmore College this afternoon. The Herons are now 6-1-1 and 0-0-1 in the league. The Thoroughbreds are now 3-2-2 and 0-1-1 in league play.

Skidmore struck first with a goal in the 48th minute. The ball got behind William Smith goalie, junior Amanda Davis and junior Elena Stansky was there to send the ball into the back of the net from one yard out. Senior Dana Brill was credited with the assist.

The Herons tied up the game in the 78th minute, when sophomore Whitney Frary scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick.

In the first overtime period, William Smith had a scoring opportunity when senior BreLynn Nasypany took a shot from inside of the box that went wide of the goal. In the 105th minute, Frary had a chance to get the game-winner, but her shot from the top of the box was saved by Skidmore junior goalie Meghan Sleezer.

The Thoroughbreds had a scoring opportunity in the 106th minute. Sophomore Alyssa Miller fired a shot from the far right wing, but Davis was there to make the save. The Herons earned a corner kick in the final minute of the second overtime, but could not get a shot off before time expired.

Davis recorded six saves in all 110 minutes in goal for William Smith. Sleezer finished with five saves for Skidmore. The Herons held a 15-13 advantage in shots. Skidmore recorded four corner kicks, while William Smith earned two.

The Herons return to action tomorrow, Sept. 25, when they travel to play another Liberty League game at Union at 2 p.m.
