#15 Herons rally for conference win at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—
First-year Melanie O'Connor scored with four minutes remaining in regulation to lift 15th-ranked William Smith to a 4-3 victory over Union in Liberty League field hockey action at Frank Bailey Field. O'Connor and senior Emily Atwan posted four points each to power the Herons.

William Smith (8-1, 1-1) trailed 3-2 before Atwan notched her eighth of the season to tie it. Her shot from 15 yards out came at 57:30. Atwan assisted on the eventual game winner at 66:00. She took a pass off the corner and dished to the middle to O'Connor, who scored her third of the year for the victory.

Isabel Zellweger gave the Duchwomen (3-3, 1-2) their first lead of the day at 50:51. She picked up her own rebound on the doorstep and tallied her third of the year for a 3-2 Union lead. Kelsey Powers had tied it for the Dutchwomen at 46:50 on an assist from Catherine Moran.

William Smith had a 2-1 lead at the half. After Powers scored with an assist from Alex King 13:58 into the game, first-year Margaret McConnell got an assist from Atwan at 17:36 and scored from close in on the left side. O'Connor made it 2-1 Herons with just 1:56 left in the first half. Junior Kiersten Hamilton passed to O'Connor, who scored from 12 yards out.

Union had two sucessive corners in the final seconds. As time ran out on the final corner, Powers took a pass to the right of William Smith senior goalie Chelsea Snyder, but her high flip shot sailed just over the net to end the contest.

Snyder made five saves while Union's Sarah Rios stopped six. The Dutchwomen had an 18-14 shot advantage and had 13 corners to the Herons' nine.

William Smith will return to McCooey Field to host league rival Rochester at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29.
