GRANTHAM, Pa.—The Hobart soccer team stunned defending national champion and top-ranked, Messiah College 2-1 in overtime in a non-conference game played at Messiah's Shoemaker Field. The Statesmen improve their record to 2-0 overall, while the Falcons fall to 0-1.
Hobart trailed the Falcons 1-0 in the second half, but equalized to force OT with just under 14 minutes left in regulation. Junior
Tommy Hayes sent home the game-winning goal 6:27 into overtime. Hayes one-timed a pass from senior
Kevin McCarthy to give the Statesmen the win.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard late in the first half when first-year Josiah Groff scored his first collegiate goal in the 38th minute to put Messiah up 1-0.
In the 77th minute, the Statesmen took a corner kick, and through a crowd in front of the goal, junior
Lukas Petersen scored the goal that sent the game into overtime. It was Petersen's fist goal as a Statesman. Junior
Michael Moulton earned the assist.
Hobart held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the second half, and a 19-10 edge in total. The Statesmen earned seven corner kicks, while the Falcons had five.

Charlie Hale played all 96:27 in goal for Hobart and recorded four saves. Messiah senior goalkeeper Kyle Fulks stopped four shots.

The Statesmen return to action tomorrow, Sept. 4, when they travel to play another non-conference game at Franklin & Marshall.
