#13 Statesmen fall to #14 Utica

UTICA, N.Y.—
The No. 13 Hobart hockey team cut its deficit to one with 5 minutes, 55 second left, but No. 14 Utica scored with 44 seconds remaining to secure a 4-2 win in an ECAC West game played tonight.

The Pioneers are now 14-5-0 and 3-3-0 in the ECAC West, and ended the Statesmen's four game win streak. Hobart is now 12-5-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 11 minutes, 10 seconds into the opening period, when Steve Charest scored his sixth goal of the season. Sean Timkey and George Lotito were credited with the assists. With just 21 seconds left in the first period, Tim Coffman collected a pass from Jordan Hobaica and found the back of the net to put Utica up 2-0.

Hobart cut its deficit to one when senior Tommy Capalbo capitalized on a power-play opportunity 8:08 into the middle period. It was Capalbo's seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Ryan Corcoran and senior Christopher Bower earned the assists.

The Pioneers stretched their lead back to two, 13:03 in the third period, when Lou Malvasi broke away and scored on a one-on-one with Hobart goaltender sophomore Nick Broadwater. Charest and Robert Etts registered assists.

Just 1:02 later, the Statesmen rallied to make it 3-2. Sophomore Frank Salituro took a pass from first-year Tom Rush and fired a shot past the Utica goaltender Evan Smith. It was Salituro's fifth goal this year. Senior Josh Taylor also recorded an assist on the play.

With 44 seconds remaining in regulation, Jon Gaffney scored his 10th goal of the year for the final margin. Mike Slowikowski recorded the assist.

Broadwater finished with 18 saves in goal for Hobart. Smith recorded 20 saves for Utica. Both teams registered 22 shots. The Statesmen were 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Pioneers were 0-for-4.

Hobart will take on Utica again tomorrow, Jan. 29 in Utica, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
