#14 Utica tops #13 Hobart

UTICA, N.Y.—
The No. 14 Utica hockey team defeated No. 13 Hobart 5-0 in an ECAC West game played tonight at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The Pioneers are now 15-5-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the ECAC West, while the Statesmen are now 12-6-1 and 2-4-0 in league play.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Chris Santiago scored Utica's first goal 3 minutes, 15 seconds into the game off assists from George Lotito and Steve Charest. Then 3:07 later, Evan Chlanda capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage to put the Pioneers up by two. Tim Coffman earned the assist.

The Statesmen came out stronger in the second period, out-shooting Utica 12-4, but Hobart wasn't able to break through. The Pioneers added to their lead 6:46 seconds into the second stanza. Coffman put Utica up 3-0 after a quick pass in front from Chlanda. One of the Statesmen's scoring chances came with a little over three minutes left in the period. First-year Tommy Fiorentino broke by a Utica defender, but Pioneer goalie Nick Therrien made the glove save.

Utica scored two more goals in the third period. Chalanda collected a pass from Robert Etts and found the back of the net 4:23 into the period to make it 4-0. Coffman also earned an assist. Chalanda scored his third goal of the game with 5:16 left in regulation. Coffman once again set up the play.

Therrien finished with 20 saves in goal for Utica. Sophomore Nick Broadwater registered 27 saves for Hobart. Utica was 1-for-4 on the power play, and the Statesmen were 0-for-7. The Pioneers held a 32-20 advantage in shots.

The Statesmen return to action Feb. 4, when they host Neumann for an ECAC West game at The Cooler at 7 p.m.
