GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior
Kiersten Hamilton's two goals led the 18th-ranked William Smith field hockey team past Union College 3-0 in Liberty League action at McCooey Field this afternoon.
Hamilton opened the scoring for the Herons (9-2, 2-1) on a penalty corner in the 10th minute.
Amy David set up the marker from the left wing.
Eight minutes later, Hamilton found the back of the net again. Sophomore
Taylor Cappello, running up the right wing, sent a centering pass which Hamilton slammed past Union keeper Mary McCune. William Smith added a third goal with just nine seconds left in the half when
Melanie O'Connor hit the back of the cage off an assist from
Sarah Tompson.
Junior
Sara Helmer helped keep the shutout alive in the 27th minute when she made a defensive save.
The Dutchwomen's (0-8, 0-3) best opportunity of the afternoon came just four minutes into the match, when Nicole Merigliano found herself open and beat Heron goaltender
Taryn Little only to have her shot bounce off the left post. Natalie Engel kept Union in the contest, both early and late, recording two defensive saves.
Little and
Catherine Hare combined for the shutout without making a save. McCune and Corey Hedges combined to make 11 stops for Union.
The Herons held the advantage in both shots (27-3) and penalty corners (19-3).
William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 7 at McCooey Field when they host Vassar (5-4, 1-1). Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
