Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 2 William Smith soccer team earned its 12th shutout with a 1-0 win over Vassar College in a Liberty League match played this afternoon at the Brewers' Gordon Field.

William Smith improved to 12-0-1 and 6-0-0 in league play. The Herons are currently in first place in the Liberty League with 18 points, and have clinched a spot in the conference tournament. The Brewers (6-7-1, 1-4-1 Liberty) are in seventh place in the Liberty League with four points.

The Herons dictated the game's tempo and held a 29-3 advantage in shots. The stifling William Smith defense did not allow a single shot on goal. Senior Amanda Davis played all 90 minutes in net for the Herons, and notched her ninth shutout of the season.

In the 36th minute, the Herons took a 1-0 lead as junior Whitney Frary fired a pass on the ground into the box. First-year Madeline Buckley collected the ball with her back to the goal eight yards out, turned, and drilled a low shot for her first goal of the season. Frary now leads the team with 19 points on seven goals and five assists.

Vassar's best scoring opportunity came in the 29th minute when Kelsey Domb broke free and headed a cross off the back post.  The rebound went right back to her but her volley attempt went wide. Vassar's Lily Lanier made eight saves in the losing effort.

Each team recorded one corner kick in the game.

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they host Union for a Liberty League match slated for 2 p.m.
