GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 17 William Smith field hockey team made a solitary goal stand up this afternoon, slipping past Liberty League rival Vassar 1-0. Senior
Kiersten Hamilton drove home the game-winner in the 41st minute.
The Herons (10-2, 3-1) dominated the match, outshooting the visitors 31-3, but struggled to solve the Brewers' goalie Maggie Brelis (14 saves). The sophomore made 11 saves in the first half to keep the match scoreless.
Vassar (5-5, 1-2) had a couple of chances before the break, but junior goalie
Taryn Little notched a pair of saves on the way to her second shutout of the season.
William Smith kept the pressure on in the second half, earning a penalty corner that set the stage for the only goal. Junior
Annie Kietzman's insertion when right to Hamilton at the top of the circle. She sent a low screaming strike into the left corner of the cage for her sixth tally of the year.
The Brewers had two penalty corners following the goal, but couldn't generate a shot on frame. William Smith held possession for almost all of the final five minutes, running out the clock with a game of keep away in the corner in the attack end of the field.
The Herons enjoyed a 20-4 advantage in penalty corners.
William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, when the Herons host Rensselaer (6-3, 3-1). The Engineers also posted a one-goal victory today, edging Rochester 2-1. The Brewers will visit the Yellowjackets tomorrow.
