GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart hockey team led 2-1 after the opening period, but No. 7 Utica rallied to defeat the Statesmen 4-2 in an ECAC West game played at The Cooler tonight. Hobart is now 2-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
The Pioneers improved to 5-1-0 and 1-1-0 in the ECAC West. Cody Adam led Utica with three assists, and Trever Hertz chipped in two goals.
The Statesmen scored first 8:38 into the first period. First-year
Tommaso Traversa scored his first collegiate goal off assists from first-years
Peter Quigley and
Ian Coleman. Hertz tied things up for Utica at 14:41 with his first goal of the night. George Lotito and Adams earned the assists.
With 1:36 left in the first, junior
Brad Richard capitalized on a power play to give the Statesmen a 2-1 lead. Senior
Greg Ciciola and sophomore
Keith Clarke set up the play.
At 8:03 in the second period, Tim Coffman scored his third goal of the season to tie things up at two. Evan Chlanda and Roberts Etts were credited with the assists. Just 2:07 into the final period Soichiro Omi put the Pioneers on top, 3-2. Adam Graff and Adams recorded the assists.
Hobart pulled goalie junior
Nick Broadwater in the final seconds of the third period for the extra skater, but the Statesmen could not find the game-tying goal. Hertz scored his second goal of the night on an empty net off an assist from Adams.
Broadwater finished with 19 saves in 59:30 in goal for Hobart. Nick Therrien stopped 31 shots in 59:55 between the pipes for Utica.
The Statesmen held a 33-23 lead in shots. Hobart was 1-for-7 on the power play, and the Statesmen killed every penalty, as the Pioneers were 0-for-5.
Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 18, when they travel to play Elmira in another ECAC West game beginning at 7 p.m.
