Statesmen remain unbeaten with 86-63 win at D'Youville

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team led from start to finish to improve to 3-0 with an 86-63 at D'Youville this afternoon. The Statesmen had five players hit double figures in the scoring column led by the 12-point efforts of senior Josh Kalenderian and junior Stefan Thompson.

Hobart shot just over 50 percent from the floor (32-of-63), racing out to a 13-2 lead just five minutes into the contest and a 23-5 lead just past the midway point of the first half. After leading by as many as 23, the Statesmen carried a 43-25 lead into halftime.

After the intermission, Hobart never led its lead dip below 16, cruising to its second win over the Spartans in as many meetings. The Statesmen enjoyed a sizeable advantage on the glass, outrebounding D'Youville 57-32. It's the most rebounds in a game for Hobart since grabbing 60 against the Spartans last season.

Thompson was 6-of-8 from the floor, while Kalenderian was 3-of-4 and converted all six of his free throw attempts to match his career scoring high. Senior Matt Pebole registered his fifth career double-double on 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Richie Bonney added 10 points and eight boards, while first-year Trey Blanding chipped in 10 points. Sophomore Joe Gibbons came up just short in his bid for a double-double, logging eight points and nine rebounds.

Reysean Johnson paced D'Youville (0-5) with 14 points, while Greg Osika and Deon Williams contributed 13 points apiece. The Spartans shot just 33.8 percent from the floor.

With the victory, Head Coach Mike Neer became just the second Hobart head coach to win his first three games with the Statesmen. He joined Dr. George Sweetland '97, who won his first first five games at Hobart, guiding the Statesmen to a 4-0 record in 1914-15 and winning the 1915-16 season opener.

Hobart will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when the Statesmen compete in the first round of the Wendy's Classic. Pairings for the 46th annual tournament will be announced tomorrow.
