Box Score Box Score

HYANNIS, Mass.—The Hobart College hockey team won the 2011 Cape Cod Lighthouse College Hockey Invitational Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Amherst in the championship game at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center this afternoon. Junior goaltender Marty Ausserhofer made 24 saves in net for the Statesmen to earn Most Valuable Player honors.

Joining Ausserhofer on the All-Tournament Team were a pair of fellow Statesmen – first-year Bronson Kovacs and sophomore forward Tommy Fiorentino – after the duo combined for five goals and one assist in Hobart's semifinal round victory over Babson on Saturday.

Senior Greg Ciciola led the Hobart offense this afternoon, recording a goal and an assist. The Statesmen are now 4-4-0 this season. Hobart served the Lord Jeffs (3-1-0) their first loss of the year.

Hobart jumped out to an immediate 1-0 lead in the championship game, as  Ciciola scored his third goal of the season off a Terrence O'Neill feed just 24 seconds in. That lead would hold up until early in the second period, when Amherst tied up the game at 5:31 in the second period. Johnny Van Siclen capitalized on a power play and scored his fourth goal of the year off assists from Jeremy Deutsch and Nick Brunette.

However, at 16:23 in the second, junior David Stevens put the Statesmen back on top for good. It was his first goal of the season. Sophomore Keith Clarke set up the play.

Junior Bobby Hannah added an insurance goal for Hobart to make it 3-1 at 9:03 in the third period. Cicola and junior Mike White earned the assists. Amherst pulled its goalie with 57 seconds remaining for an extra skater, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Ausserhofer, who followed up a five-save first period with nine stops in the second and 10 more in the third for a total of 24 saves in the contest. Coupled with his 16 stops in a little more than 48 minutes of action in Hobart's semifinal victory over Babson, the junior netminder turned away 40 of the 42 shots on goal that he faced in the tournament to earn Most Valuable Player honors.

Nathan Corey turned aside 28 shots in 59:03 in goal for the Lord Jeffs. Hobart held a 31-25 advantage in shots. The Statesmen were 0-for-2 on the power play, while Amherst was 1-for-2.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when the Statesmen host Geneseo in The Cooler at 7 p.m.
