Pebole cracks top 10 as Hobart opens Wendy's run with a win

PITTSFORD, N.Y.—Senior forward Matt Pebole moved into 10th place on the Hobart basketball team's career scoring list with 22 points in an 83-58 win over St. John Fisher in the quarterfinal round of the Wendy's College Classic.

The Statesmen shot over 50 percent from the floor (57.9) for the third time in four games this season. Pebole led the charge, connecting on 8-of-12, including a 3-pointer, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He raised his career points total to 1,253, passing Michael Gambino '02 to take over 10th place on the all-time list.

Pebole also led Hobart to a 35-28 rebounding advantage with a game-high eight boards. The Statesmen controlled the paint, outscoring Fisher 34-28, and took advantage of turnovers, outscoring the Cardinals 21-7 off giveaways.

Junior guard Stefan Thompson and sophomore guard Rezin Davis added 12 points apiece for Hobart, while Joe Gibbons chipped in seven points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

The first 14 minutes of the contest were hotly contested with the lead changing hands 10 times, but the Statesmen seized control with nine unanswered points and went into halftime up 43-28 thanks to a 19-3 run. A Jason Norsen (15 points) layup gave Fisher a 25-24 lead with 6:50 left in the first half, but the Cardinals turned the ball over on their next four possessions and shot just 1-of-6 from the floor for the rest of the half.

St. John Fisher was able to get within 13 on two occassions in the second half, but Hobart used an 18-4 run to squash any hopes of a cameback.

The Statesmen improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1978-79, while the Cardinals slip to 2-3. Hobart will face the winner of the Brockport-Roberts Wesleyan game in the Wendy's semifinals on Friday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at RIT.
