Statesmen down Seahawks 5-1

First-year Ryan Michel scored a goal and earned two assists as the Hobart College hockey team breezed to a 5-1 win over Salve Regina in a non-conference game played tonight. The Statesmen improve to 2-1-0 overall, and the Seahawks dropped their season opener.

Junior Frank Salituro logged back-to-back goals, and senior Greg Ciciola chipped in a goal and an assist.  Junior Marty Ausserhofer played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart, logging his first win of the season. He finished with 22 saves.

Ciciola put Hobart up 1-0 with his first goal of the year at 16:52 in the first period.  Just 1:23 later, Michel made it 2-0. Juniors Cam Miller and Bobby Hannah earned the assists. It was Michel's first goal as a Statesman. With just 56 seconds left in the opening period Salituro was able to capitalize on a power-play and score his first goal of the night. Michel and Ciciola were credited with the assists.

The Statesmen continued the scoring in the second period. Just 1:02 in, Salituro struck again. His second goal also came on a power-play. He leads Hobart with three goals this season. Junior Harry Radovich and Michel set up the play.

At 11:11 in the second, Salve Regina broke through. Henry DeSimone made it 4-1 after a pass from John Scorcia. Jacob Hutt also earned an assist on the play.

At 8:55 in the final period, first-year Peter Quigley stretched the Statesmen lead back to four. He took a pass from junior Ryan Corcoran, and fired into the goal for his first collegiate tally.

J.C. Turgeon stopped five shots in the first period in goal for Salve Regina, and then Mike McDonald came in for the final two periods and made 36 saves.

Hobart enjoyed a 46-23 advantage in shots. The Statesmen were 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Seahawks were 0-for-4.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 11 when they host Neumann for their home opener and an ECAC West conference game in The Cooler at 7 p.m.
